LIST OF CENTRAL AUTHORITIES

USE NOTE

(Last Updated: 14 Apr 1998

The United States Central Authority has requested that all

applications from the United States asking for return of a

child under the convention be sent through the U.S. Central

Authority even though the convention itself permits direct

access to any Central Authority by anyone seeking the return

of the child. (See Article 8.)

Both Australia and Canada have designated not only a federal

Central Authority, but Central Authorities for each state or

province. The Australian federal Central Authority requests

that all applications be sent to it; the Canadian federal

Central Authority has not made such a request.

The Convention is applicable in an appropriate case whether

or not an application has been filed with or through a

Central Authorities. Where the location of the child is

known, an attorney has been retained, and immediate action

is necessary or desirable, direct application to a court or

other appropriate agency is possible. In such a case, the

U.S. Central Authority wishes to be advised of its pendency.

In all cases, where a decision is reached by a court, both

the U.S. Central Authority and the Permanent Bureau of the

Hague Conference on Private International Law request that a

copy of the decision by forwarded to them. Alternately, a

copy of this decision may be mailed to the Hague Abduction

Committee, Family Law Section, American Bar Association, for

further distribution.

The U.S. Central Authority should be consulted for

information on new signatory countries or changes in the

Central Authorities of the contracting States.
